First of all, I have to say there is absolutely no science or politics behind my selections. I mostly pick dogs whose names I like from my favorite breed(s) within each group. That said, here’s who I like to win this year’s Westminster prizes. All of the photos come from the breeders’ websites.
***Please note: This has been updated as of 2/16 at 9:15 am – some of the dogs I picked originally did not come to the big show! I had to change to dogs that appear in the official list when I got on-site.***
From the Sporting Group: Tamaron’s Tag You’re It. Of course he’s a Vizsla, what else would I pick?
Fox Sports has now posted the winning run at the 2015 Master’s Agility Competition at Westminster from last night. I don’t want to spoil the surprise or anything, but a Border Collie won.
Sorry – couldn’t get the video to embed on here, so you’ll have to follow the link above to watch the video. This dog was pretty amazing!
I’ve made a couple of new human friends here at Meet the Breeds. If you want more information and MUCH better pictures from today, check out Newsday.com. Their photographer is also posting on Instagram, but I don’t know the handle (or whatever it’s called on Instagram – not something I ever do.)
And if your TV gets NY’s Channel 9, there will be a feature during the 10 pm Eastern hour on Monday night.
This event was interesting but a total mob! If you’ve ever been to a really crowded trade show, you’ll be able to imagine how this went. Each breed club had a booth, and one or more dogs available to meet and greet the public. As you’ll see by the pictures, it was very hands-on. I tried to crop out faces, just in case anyone’s in the CIA, but you’ll see lots of hands reaching in to touch the dogs. And some of them are pretty blurry because the crowd was jostling me as I shot. For some reason, that happened the most with the new breeds that aren’t even being shown yet – they’re still in the Foundation Stock Service, meaning that they need to build up their numbers before full acceptance as an AKC breed. Being in the FSS, however, allows them to keep records similar to a pedigree so a dog can prove its purebred status. Continue reading Valentine Love from the AKC Meet the Breeds Event→
I’ve arrived at the press room for Piers 92 and 94, where there are two events going on today: The Masters Agility Championship and the AKC Meet the Breeds event.
This is the first time both events have been held at the same time as the big dog show, and the crowds are tremendous! Last night in the hotel lobby, it was pretty funny because a lot of people didn’t know that Westminster was this weekend, and they couldn’t figure out why everyone had a dog with them! The 2 Boxers shown above waited so patiently in the check-in line. Such good dogs! Continue reading Westminster 2015, Day One: Agility and Meet the Breeds→
NYC has been exciting so far! With all the traffic between people getting ready for Westminster 2015 and people there for the NBA All Star events, the Hotel Pennsylvania is packed to the gills! An hour in the check-in line alone!
Which was good because it gave me a chance to snap a few photos. Unfortunately, my camera did NOT like the light in there, so these aren’t great, but it will give you a flavor of the place.
The Dog Lady is off today – she’s making her way to New York City for the big Westminster Dog Show. Her schedule includes Saturday at the Agility competition, with a stop by the AKC Meet the Breeds event. Monday and Tuesday will be jam-packed with conformation showing, starting with the breed competitions at 8:30 am.
If you’re at the show, look for a tall woman with spiked blonde hair and a T-shirt that reads doggies.com. If you won’t make it to Manhattan, check out our Facebook page and our Twitter feed (@TheDogDen) for up-to-the minute reporting. And, of course, she’ll be entering blog posts as fast as her little fingers can type.
